Comments:
While the serial number prefix "S8" would suggest 1978 as the year of manufacture, it is highly common for Fender to have used leftover 1978-stamped neck decals for several years during the late CBS era. The tone pot code 1378103 (manufactured by CTS in the 3rd week of 1981) confirms that the guitar was assembled and completed no earlier than January 1981. This instrument is a prime example of the "late CBS transition" period, as indicated by the return of the four-bolt neck plate, the aluminum foil shielding on the back of the pickguard, and the disappearance of the bullet truss rod. The combination of a black finish, black pickguard, and rosewood board was a popular "sleek" look for the era, contrasting with the traditional "Butterscotch" or "Natural" finishes. By 1981, Fender was beginning to move toward the "International Color" series and the subsequent "Standard" (Dan Smith era) redesigns, but many guitars still retained the classic heavy-body, late-70s aesthetic.
