Comments:
The Explorer was originally released in 1958 as part of Gibson's "futuristic" series alongside the Flying V. It was so radical for its time that it was discontinued by 1963 due to poor sales. In 1976, Gibson reintroduced the model to compete with similar "copycat" designs from other brands. The "76 Reissue" name (often called the X-Plorer during the 90s) became the standard production version for the USA factory from 1990 to 2013. The Heritage Cherry finish was a staple for this model but was eventually discontinued around 2007. While the original 1958 models were made of Korina wood, the '76 reissues use solid Mahogany, which provides a thicker, warmer tone that became foundational for hard rock and heavy metal artists like James Hetfield and The Edge.
