The Gibson SJ-200, often known as the "King of the Flat-Tops," was first introduced in 1937 (originally as the "Super Jumbo") to meet the demand for a guitar with a powerful, balanced sound that could project over other instruments in an ensemble. The "200" in the name referred to its original high price tag of $200. This 2016 Standard model continues this legacy while incorporating key modern features. It features the classic Super Jumbo body shape with a solid Sitka spruce top and solid flame maple back and sides, a combination known for its loud, bright, and transparent tone. The finish is a high-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer, allowing the wood's natural vibrancy to shine through. The guitar includes several upgrades specific to the 2016 line, such as an improved fingerboard edge softened for better comfort, a premium setup utilizing Plek technology, and the high-end LR Baggs Anthem pickup system. This system combines an internal microphone and an under-saddle piezo pickup to deliver an authentic amplified tone. Notable musicians who have famously used the SJ-200 include Elvis Presley, Pete Townshend, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, and Emmylou Harris.
