Comments:
The K. Yairi YD-305 is a highly regarded, "lawsuit-era" dreadnought crafted during what many consider the golden age of Japanese luthiery. Kazuo Yairi’s workshop in Kani, Japan, was famous for its meticulous hand-craftsmanship and extensive wood-seasoning processes. The YD-305 was a high-end model in the YD (Yairi Dreadnought) series, designed specifically to compete with the Martin D-28, offering premium tonewoods and a build quality that often rivalled or surpassed its American counterparts of the same era. Unlike lower-tier Japanese guitars of the era, the YD-305 features a solid spruce top. While there is often debate regarding Yairi’s "parallel-grain" laminate back and sides, the YD-305 was typically built with very high-grade materials that have aged exceptionally well over the last 50 years. Kazuo Yairi famously insisted on hand-shaving the internal bracing to tune each top individually, a practice usually reserved for boutique luthiers today.
