Comments:
Dick Knight was a renowned British luthier whose career spanned from the post-war era through the late 20th century. After an early partnership in the 1940s, he spent several years working in a woodworking mill while building guitars in his garden shed to support his family. The 1960s marked a major turning point: following the death of his wife in 1963, Knight left his industrial job to focus on guitar making full-time. In 1967, he officially partnered with his son-in-law, Gordon Wells, to form Knight Guitars in Surrey. Known for "voluptuous" big-band style archtops and exceptional hand-carved tops, his reputation grew rapidly among professional musicians during this decade. By the late 60s, his workshop in Addlestone became a destination for legendary figures like David Gilmour, who commissioned a custom acoustic in 1969, and Pete Townshend, for whom Knight provided expert repair and setup work.
