Comments:
The "M" body size (also known as 0000) originated in the 1960s when luthiers began converting Martin F-series archtop guitars into flat-tops. Following the success of the M-38 in 1977, Martin introduced the slightly more utilitarian M-36 in 1978. It combines the wide lower bout of a Jumbo (16 inches) with the shallower depth of a 000/OM, offering dreadnought-like bass without the bulk. This specific 1993 model belongs to the "Standard Series" era before the "Reimagined" updates of 2018. It is highly regarded by studio musicians for its balanced EQ and recording-friendly projection. Like the D-35, the M-36 features a signature three-piece back of East Indian Rosewood, which provides a distinct visual profile and slightly more flexible resonance. Unusually for Martin, older M-36 models like this one often featured an Ebony fingerboard paired with a Rosewood bridge, a unique aesthetic choice not found on most other Standard Series models. As of 2025, Martin has removed the M-36 from its standard production lineup, making existing models like this 1993 version more sought after on the secondary market.
